Air Knife FAQs

Our Air Knives are engineered exclusively for use with compressed air. Blowers generally lack the pressure required to achieve the high-velocity discharge these knives are designed for. Furthermore, blowers tend to be significantly bulkier, noisier, and require larger plumbing connections (typically 3”–6”) compared to streamlined compressed air setups.

Because our Air Knives are precision-machined to exacting tolerances, they cannot be cut or modified in the field. Altering the unit would compromise the internal chambers and permanent seals, making it impossible to restore the engineered airflow.

The good news: We specialize in custom solutions! If our standard sizes don’t fit your application, we can manufacture a custom-length Air Knife built specifically to your requirements.

Yes, the output force can be adjusted by increasing the total volume of air passing through the unit. This is typically achieved in two ways:

  • Adjust Manifold Pressure: Increase the supply pressure at your regulator (not to exceed the maximum safe operating limit of 250 PSIG).

  • Expand the Air Gap: Install additional shims to increase the internal gap. This allows a higher volume of air to exit the knife, resulting in greater mass flow and force.

Replacement shim sets and high-performance accessories can be found in our [Accessories Section].

Regardless of the application, we recommend operating the Air Knife at the lowest pressure necessary to achieve the desired result. Using a pressure regulator is strongly advised to precisely control and adjust airflow until your application requirements are met.

The maximum allowable operating pressure for our Air Knife is 250 PSIG. Operating beyond this limit is not recommended.

For maximum stability, we recommend mounting the Air Knife to a rigid compressed air supply pipe. This ensures secure positioning and consistent performance.

If this is not feasible for your setup, the Air Knife is equipped with multiple 1/4-20 threaded mounting holes located on the back of the unit, allowing for alternative mounting configurations.

Accessories:
For added flexibility and easier installation, we also offer an optional magnetic base Air Knife mount. This accessory allows for quick positioning and secure attachment to suitable metal surfaces within your production line.

Yes. While 54” is our largest standard size, we can manufacture Air Knives up to 109” in a single unit. We can also custom machine virtually any length upon special request to meet your application requirements.

Additionally, our Air Knives feature a full-flow design, meaning two or more units can be coupled together without interrupting the continuous air sheet. This allows you to achieve extended coverage while maintaining uniform airflow performance.

Accessories:
Multiple Air Knives can be securely joined using our optional coupling bracket, available in the Accessories section.

The allowable operating temperature range depends on the material of construction:

  • Aluminum Air Knife: Up to 275°F (135°C)

  • Stainless Steel (Type 303) Air Knife: Up to 400°F (204°C)

  • Stainless Steel (Type 316) Air Knife: Up to 800°F (427°C)

Operating temperatures above 800°F (427°C) may cause intergranular corrosion, which can damage the Air Knife and potentially obstruct the air gap opening.

Before increasing the standard .002” gap opening by adding shims, it is essential to verify that the Air Knife is operating properly. Reduced airflow can often be caused by factors such as a clogged filter, restricted air lines, or an undersized air compressor.

To confirm that full line pressure is reaching the unit, we recommend installing a pipe tee with a pressure gauge at any available Air Knife inlet. This will allow you to verify that the proper supply pressure is present.

If full line pressure is confirmed and additional airflow is still required, turn off the compressed air supply and carefully disassemble the Air Knife. Before reassembly with an additional shim, thoroughly clean all components, including the Air Knife body, cap, and shim.

When reassembling, ensure that each screw is tightened evenly to 7.5 ft-lbs of torque.

Every Air Knife is thoroughly tested before leaving our facility to ensure proper and uniform airflow. If you experience dead spots, please review the following possible causes:

  1. Clogging or contamination:
Inspect the Air Knife for debris or internal contamination that may be obstructing airflow. If cleaning is required, please follow the instructions provided in the Installation and Maintenance Manual included with your purchase.

  2. Overtightened screws:
Screws that are overtightened during installation or mounting can distort the unit and affect airflow uniformity. Ensure all screws are tightened evenly to 7.5 ft-lbs of torque.

  3. Restricted air supply:
Undersized air lines, clogged filters, or restrictive fittings can limit airflow entering the Air Knife plenum chamber. Verify that your air supply system is properly sized and free of restrictions.

If the issue persists after these checks, please contact our technical support team for further assistance.
